Why NOW is the wrong time to buy a 3D TV

3d TV glasses thumb Why NOW is the wrong time to buy a 3D TVIt’s not ready yet. I’m so surprised at the efforts of the TV hardware makers and Hollywood to sell the public something that just isn’t ready.

And the theaters must be furious! One of the last things that theaters have to offer is the glamor of that 3D moment in a theater; wearing the geeky glasses and hearing all the ‘oooos’ and ‘ahhhhs!’ during the movie, and yet here’s every TV maker going ga-ga over 3D, and now every movie released since Avatar has to be in 3D— its disgusting.

The problem is the technology; it’s not there yet. But this isn’t stopping them from flying off the shelves and people clamoring to get the NEW stuff from the techie world.

Those poor lost souls.

Flat screen TV’s came in to the public reach about 10 years ago, from that point it was trouble with this, that’s better and stay away from that brand. Well, now it’s like every other day there’s another 3D TV maker with their own version of 3D, and how they’re going to do it.

I have to be honest here; if I was going to invite some people over to watch a movie, or to watch Super Bowl, I don’t want to be sitting around with all my cool buddies with every single one of them screaming and looking like Ray Charles. The picture just doesn’t fit with me.

3D glasses thumb Why NOW is the wrong time to buy a 3D TVHave you priced those 3D glasses? Anywhere from $100 to $250 PER PAIR. So how many people do you want to be able to watch 3D? And do you want them to watch that bad? At 5 people that’s an even $1000.

The prices of the TV’s, you know… the old flat screen TV’s [so yesterday] were just starting to come down in price. It was almost to the point anyone could have a flat screen TV, but now they have a whole NEW kind of TV; so now we need to start selling TV’s all over again! And that’s the problem I’ve had with tech forever… right when something starts becoming refined, they go and change it a little and then they want to sell you the same crap all over again.

Just like they did with VCR to DVD, and from DVD to DVD Blu-Ray; and honestly, I believe that’s going to be the end of DVD discs, or movies on disc [but that’s another diatribe].

I have to clarify, I’m not really impressed with 3D. Never have been. I have a flat screen TV and I have watch 3D movies on it with those 3D glasses and really no big deal.

So before I go out and pay for a whole new 55” 3D TV, I’m going to be asking myself, what am I going to be missing if I don’t have 3D? Not much. I suspect that the only thing I’ll be missing is the right to clarify I watched something in 3D… and spending $2000 on a whole new TV, when the last one worked just fine.

And to buy a TV right now, when no one has a definitive standard; everyone wants to do it their way… does no one remember the battle over DVD Blu-Ray and DVD-HD? Remember how many customers were left in the cold after DVD Blu-Ray won the battle… right. Now your thinking… and good.

So, relax, let the other people battle out who does it best and what the standards are going to be, and if you still find that you want a 3D TV later on; at least you’ll have a much better idea of what’s standard and prices should be lower by then.
