Microsoft Outlook Connector: A Po-Boy’s XOBNI

swh403bpWhen I was going through the new Wave 4 beta stuff I downloaded the Microsoft Outlook Connector and installed [actually] by mistake.

I didn’t actually realize what it was until I restarted Microsoft Outlook. It’s Microsoft’s attempt to generate a Xobni clone straight from the clanging bowels of Microsoft.

It’s an initial offering to attempt to keep the non-Xobni users of the world quasi-happy with Microsoft Outlook. The problem is that it’s got a cheapness about it and not well thought out.

Microsoft Outlook Steals Performance

outlook stealsI’m not going to argue the point that Microsoft Outlook is a very popular email client, and it’s the most used, and desired, function of Microsoft Office, but I think at what cost are we using it?

Microsoft Office/Outlook 2007 is not my email client of choice, but I’ve to use it at work. Every job/office I know of uses Microsoft Outlook for their email clients and typically the machines Microsoft Outlook was loaded on was not a supreme machine.

So how’s this really productive? It’s not.

SOCIALMAIL for Mozilla Thunderbird v3

SocialMAILI can’t say enough about this plug-in. The author, in just a very short period of time, went from concept to product release in just a few weeks.

SOCIALMAIL is a free option/alternative for XOBNI for Thunderbird. Since the release of XOBNI, it’s been a request of users over and over; tirelessly asking for an option like this and now they’re finally going to have it.

If you’re not  loading it – your missing out…

Xobni for Thunderbird [early with SOCIALMAIL]

xobni for ThunderbirdXobni has come on the scene like gang busters providing what seems a basic function that been should’ve been there and has been over looked for so long. It’s the perfect email client data miner.

Xobni has exclusively developed for Outlook. Microsoft must really be loving that the Xobni crew is putting so much effort in to Microsoft Outlook, but at the same time they have shunned the open source community.

And as I’ve always said, necessity spawns invention.

Thunderbird now has Xobni with SOCIALMAIL.

Can Mozilla’s Thunderbird bring it together in a Raindrop?

Thunderbird Raindrop[7]I read this article today about how Mozilla Thunderbird is coming together and they’re working on the ‘Universal Inbox’; this is SO MUCH what everyone needs.

And I agree with a lot of what it has to say.

I was discussing this with a friend of mine the other day about this very same problem and he posted a link to RainDrop and it’s a very good point.

People are communicating in all kinds of portals, Instant Message, email, forums, Twitter, Facebook…. the list goes on.

There has to be a way to make sense of it all- maybe Raindrop and be that answer.

Review: eMclient v2.0

image eMclient has presented itself as the alternative to Microsoft Outlook and while it has many competitive features, apparently it’s not ready enough to break the finish line ribbon.

Nothing would make me happier than to be able to post an absolutely outrageous and fantastic review about eMclient, but the latest release of this application, after months of waiting, was a little bit of a disappointment to me.

About a week ago the latest revision of eMclient was released, version 2. I had a previous version of eMclient and when I downloaded the next version [v2] I had some difficulties with the upgrade process. I had e-mailed the authors and I didn’t get an immediate response, but I was able to contact them through Twitter. through Twitter I got a quick response from one of the support staff and they gave me the information that needed to be able to clear out the previous installation completely and then start all over. This wasn’t a big deal because I wasn’t using eMclient as my primary e-mail program.

Outlook: INBOX spelled backwards is a step forward.

imageWhen I think of Microsoft Outlook, I think of a PIM, Email, tasks and calendar, but at the same time I think it’s bloated, not flexible enough a memory hog and the search functions are sorely lacking.

When you’re working with lots of information in one place you need to be able to get to that information fast. Having information at your finger tips is so valuable in a business relationship.

While Outlook does a good job, it’s not my choice. But recently XOBNI makes Outlook searches and information right where you need it.

But it’s not without sacrifice; the program/plug-in works in conjunction with Outlook typically drags down 200+mb [for me] and XOBNI is going to tack on and extra 20mb of memory as a separate ‘service’.

Examples:

XOBNI is really good plug-in for Outlook, but it’s a loner right now. Only focusing on Microsoft Outlook. The group doesn’t have any plans to move beyond Microsoft Outlook. Other packages were left to flounder about. So Eudora, Lotus Notes, Thunderbird, Entourage, or Outlook Express may never get this plug-in.

I personally use Thunderbird and if a alternate to XOBNI comes to Thunderbird… I’m there.

Thanks for reading!

Enjoy.
