The Arrival of Internet Based Television

iptv

This article is based on my complete disgust for the way TV programming works right now.

For the last twenty years, the Internet has been moving and growing; it’s morphed so many times and now it’s almost like it’s omnipresent. It’s an expected service of just about every device you’ve and it’s not the most used information outlet; Television is still the most viewed/used.

It’s unquestionable that the picture quality of TV has gotten better, but the same basic programming, how that content is presented to us, hasn’t changed.

Your still provided with a ‘guide’. Whether it was a TV guide or an electronic guide of what was on. It’s current state is horrible…

If it’s not one, it’s the other… ISP’s Stifling Innovation

ISP sux  It’s so hard to start with this post. I really don’t know where to go with this and yet it so bluntly apparent what the ISP’s are doing. And when I see these news articles and events it just starts crushing my dreams of a Star Trek world.

When I talk to friends and co-workers about this, they agree and it’s like a slow crashing plane. ISP’s are slowly tearing the fabric of the Internet apart with this is extra, that is extra and that’s not broadband and this is acceptable use. It makes me want to scream.

Look the genie is out of the bottle, you can’t put it back. The Internet is out there, it’s living breathing and growing everyday; AND it’s evolving faster than anyone could have possibly thought of and the old days of corporate control is out the window.

You might as well try to turn off the radio and say there’s never been music before, but now we’re going to define music for you.

iPhone customers have nothing but complaints about AT&T’s service

image AT&T and Time Warner cable have a lot in common; they love putting the screws to their customer base.

AT&T has been very popular with the iPhone, but the problem with popularity is that people become accustomed to a level of service and when the provider starts nickel and dime in the individual on services that they believe should be standard, feathers are going to get ruffled.

It’s no secret that the customers of AT&T’s iPhone have been slowly coming to a boil, but I think AT&T has found itself on the edge of a precipice. They’re going to have to start thinking about changes. Changes to the service plan and how they treat their customer base.

Time Warner Cable: Your Customers think you SUCK!

imageIt’s the best thing to hit the internet since email, or the Pamela Anderson videos…  [smile]

Time Warner Cable has screwed up so badly on their decisions to not only impose caps on monthly bandwidth [and charges], but they have actually blundered the implementation SO BAD, it’s sparked a call for government oversight!

It’s amazing what’ll happen if you piss enough people off; or if your abilities to make decisions are over shadowed by the fact you lack synaptic action to take the tin foil off the pop tart before you eat it.

TWC: Overages- Not Charged Until You Sign Up to be Monitored…

image Time Warner Cable is agreeably the worst Internet provider right now. They’re practicing old dial-up and metering services for Internet service. In the locations where TWC is ‘beta testing’ this new method of billing customer’s they have this online metering service that informs the customer how much surfing they have left before they start using their service.

By the way, you’ve to use your bandwidth to check your bandwidth, to see if you’re over your bandwidth limit. It’s like banks charging a NSF fee when they know you don’t have any money.

Now when your installed the tech says you’ll get a automated email to sign up; Don’t. Matter of fact, don’t even use their email.

Apparently, if you don’t sign up for the monitoring service, the boys at Time Warner Cable won’t know to bill you.

Time Warner adds more cities to suffer bandwidth caps

imageTime Warner is the integral part of a movement to ruin the Internet.

The Internet is a rich environment of knowledge and entertainment. It also has many possibilities for business and services.

Companies like Time Warner are crushing these services and options by placing caps on what or how much a person can do with their Internet connection.

Let there be Free WiFi Access…it’s coming.

Some of the best news to hit the Internet pertains to the FCC’s goal of allowing/providing free WiFi access to the Internet.

The major cable companies such as Comcast, Time Warner, Qwest, and many others stand to lose a lot of money in the establishment of providing free Internet service for everyone. But these companies have lobbyists in the government that are fighting for them to retain the ability to charge the crap out of John Q. Public for what they consider high-speed Internet service.

If the FCC succeeds in their goal to provide free WiFi access to Internet it would spur a huge spin off and Internet devices, connectivity, interlinking between devices and probably development of thousands of jobs. The possibility of providing free Internet service to everyone who wants it is an awesome concept, but the complexity of devising a platform in which a multitude of devices can communicate is simply mind-boggling. ISP’s Controlling You

I have been watching the buzz about the ISP bandwidth caps and content filtering; it’s all a preamble to repression and keeping people in a particular spot and the companies retaining their business. It’s self preservation, but the Internet is the wrong place to impose like this…

Over a year ago, ISP’s [COMCAST] were basically contacting customers and saying hey if you cross this line in bandwidth use, we’re gonna shut you down. The problem was, they wouldn’t say what that line was. Droves of users contacted COMCAST and inquired, but none were successful. The ISP was working out the details then, but didn’t want to say anything.

Now if COMCAST is limiting bandwidth, with their ‘unlimited internet’ use, how do you know when your getting close to going over? Quest puts it out there, so you at least know. Since COMCAST is one of the largest providers and if they can impose their will like this, who’s to stop the smaller companies from doing the same. In some areas, people have no choice as to where they get their Internet service; mostly it’s you either have dial-up [argh] or go the local ISP bully.

If you own a cell phone, it tells you how many minutes you have left. If you drive a car, you know how much gas you have left and when companies setup guidelines like this; you know how much patients your going to have left? You don’t have a clue and the ISP says we’ll call and let you know- yeah right, as opposed to just sending you larger bill for use; like banks with NSF’s, but different. They haven’t even offered to provide any tools to find out how much your using or sent an email telling ANYONE what their average is. They seem to just want to scare the heck out off you so you will stop using the Internet.

The problem with cable Internet service is that it’s shared; it’s not solely yours. You’re sharing it with everyone in you neighborhood. Yeah this is bad, or good, if you are a hermit and your the only person with a light switch for 3 miles. But let’s just stay you’re the ‘bit torrent master of hermit land’; COMCAST is gonna slow you down baby [for 20-30 minutes]. Why?! Cause your having too much fun and you are being a bandwidth bully and not sharing with the other 60 users. With DSL/FIOS you are your own island, but the thing is while ISP’s are advertising 5-20mb download speeds, most are never going to get it. You can only get the information as fast as the provider can send it.

So a couple months ago Time Warner has started testing TIERED service in small town in Texas. Testing?! You don’t test something unless your planning on doing it. So yeah, it’s here, but you don’t hear about it yet, but it’s coming. It’s like being shot with a bullet; it’s not the ones you hear go by, it’s the ones you don’t hear that are the issue. Maybe your thinking this could be good if you’re a part time user that thinks Google is cool to find recipes, but for techies, it’s a major problem; especially if you ever visit YouTube or work from home using a VPN.

There are lot of companies out there that are banking on customers having unlimited Internet usage, video, VOIP, VOD services, but wait- if the ISP’s can control your surfing and bandwidth they’re to going to control dictate which services you’ll be allowed to use. VOIP services won’t be allowed by VONAGE because of bandwidth usage, but if you go with COMCAST on the same service; no problem. You can’t NETFLIX on demand service because of bandwidth usage, but if you go with TIME WARNER on the same service; no problem. Do you see where I’m going with this?

Access to the Internet should be global, free and unlimited. From my perspective, I see it as a natural right to have access to a information resource like the Internet. It should not have it’s content filtered based on a business model and poor network architecture.
