Topics of the Week for July 16th

imageThis week in technology has been pretty interesting Google continues its world domination of the smartphone with the android platform. it continues to flex its muscles in its appeal to the public, placing tons of pressure on the iPhone and Microsoft keep generating strong competition.

Apple concedes that ‘we’re not perfect.’… Try to shut down the critics with forum censoring. Ultimately giving up and doing what they should’ve done in the first place, provided the free cases for the iPhone 4.

And for Microsoft, Steve Ballmer comes out and says that Microsoft is hard-core about tablet computers- nobody cares.

The Motorola Droid/Android Battery Life that Isn’t

cybcnd3qI have a Motorola Droid and I can’t seem to squeeze out any more battery life from the phone. Similar arguments could be made with any other Smartphones that are available on the market, but the realization is that the Motorola Droid almost has to have a charging cable connected to it at all times.

I find myself in situations where I’m at work, charging my phone. I’m in my car, charging my phone. I met my home and my phone is on the charger.

I can’t seem to get any more battery life out of it.

Android: Uber Keyboard – formerly TalktoMe Keyboard

tobkszplBetween Dragon NaturallySpeaking and Google, these are the best services right now for voice recognition. Both services utilize cloud computing with the smartphones. Both capture the information, the information is sent to a processing center, recognition is ran on information that’s presented and then sent back to the operator’s smartphone.

TalktoMe Keyboard [TTM Keyboard] is, and was, my favorite application for my Motorola Droid. It can capture 3 to 10 seconds of voice recognition data to be sent off for remote processing; pasting that information into any application inside the Motorola Droid. This is a huge improvement over the capabilities of Dragon NaturallySpeaking and the iPhone.

TalkToMe keyboard has changed their name to Uber Keyboard, and now they’re stressing the importance of speaking slowly and clearly in the aspects of voice recognition.

Skype/Panasonic Bring Video Conferencing to TV

Skype TV PanasonicLadies and gentlemen of the gallery, the moment of future is here and the life of your lowly PC is just about gone.

In times of old, you’d need a PC to do video conferencing, not anymore. Panasonic/Skype announced 01/06/2010 that the newer HD TV’s they’d be producing will have cameras and SKYPE in them.

Now you can stand around in your underwear in front of a TV and dial the wrong number and place yourself in position of extreme awkwardness..

The Future: Smart Phones Remove Privacy

smartphone privacyI’ve long said that mobile phones are not phones at all; they’re small PC’s and the function of making a phone call is only a side affect of what they can really do.

The push for phones to do all kinds of things besides voice conversations is cause for raised curiosity.

The level of necessity of the mobile phone can soon be social requirement. This is a video that’s an example of what a ‘smart’ phone can do now…

Dragon NaturallySpeaking coming to Blackberry [first]

image Nuance is still working on the release of their Dragon NaturallySpeaking for smart phones. While the release for the iPhone is still planned, it seems to be delayed a bit. The first release or beta testing of Dragon NaturallySpeaking for a smart phone will be for the Blackberry.

The release of the iPhone version is slated for release later this year… This is still very exciting news.

With everyone I’ve spoken to, they are very interested in this ability; the ability to dictate a blog from their phone.

I’m sorry, WiFi only has a few years to live

image I’m not really stating anything that already hasn’t been thought about, but you have to sit back and realize that smart phones and portable Internet enabled devices are growing by leaps and bounds.

First, the PC was outsold by the laptop and now the Internet portable devices are pulling that gap closed.

And while you read that statement your asking what’s next?

Well, your answer would be the silent little ‘airband’ cards the various cell phone carriers are offering.

No one likes having to use a ancillary device to get Internet service; especially a laptop, but this pain seemed to end with laptops having WiFi capabilities built in to the laptop; thus is why I think the Netbooks are so popular right now.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking coming to the iPhone

image I wrote an article a while back about cell phones and voice recognition, and I eluded to the phones being able to understand your voice and then write your emails and texts.

Well it’s looking like Nuance is doing just that… ‘…they read my mind’ or my blog, but anyways-

Nuance is currently working on a application/development that would bring voice recognition to your iPhone and Blackberry [initially].
