Microsoft Outlook Connector: A Po-Boy’s XOBNI

swh403bpWhen I was going through the new Wave 4 beta stuff I downloaded the Microsoft Outlook Connector and installed [actually] by mistake.

I didn’t actually realize what it was until I restarted Microsoft Outlook. It’s Microsoft’s attempt to generate a Xobni clone straight from the clanging bowels of Microsoft.

It’s an initial offering to attempt to keep the non-Xobni users of the world quasi-happy with Microsoft Outlook. The problem is that it’s got a cheapness about it and not well thought out.

Microsoft Losing Their Market Influence

4ar5ja02In the history of technology and software, Microsoft has always been a motivator to get things done, to push things in a certain direction or to be the ‘de facto’ standard with almost any decision in the technology field, but within the last few years this seems to be changing.

And while everyone is embracing ‘open’ standards and progressing Microsoft seems to be the beast who figures their way is right and they’re too big to fail.

I speculate I would’ve to argue that point right about now.

Download: Rapportive – Social Plug-in For Gmail

When I don’t have to write access to my Thunderbird, with the plug-in for SocialMail, I like to utilize Firefox with the plug-in called Rapportive. It’s a plug-in for Firefox and chrome that replaces the ads in Gmail with user specific information and biographic information.

It links up with Facebook, linked in, and other social networking websites. It utilizes the Rapleaf social networking hub to data mine information about the contact and display that information on the right-hand side of the e-mail.

Information doesn’t show up in the grid listing of the inbox, it only shows up when you’re actually looking at the specific e-mail of that person.

Microsoft Outlook Steals Performance

outlook stealsI’m not going to argue the point that Microsoft Outlook is a very popular email client, and it’s the most used, and desired, function of Microsoft Office, but I think at what cost are we using it?

Microsoft Office/Outlook 2007 is not my email client of choice, but I’ve to use it at work. Every job/office I know of uses Microsoft Outlook for their email clients and typically the machines Microsoft Outlook was loaded on was not a supreme machine.

So how’s this really productive? It’s not.

eMclient sets a date for end of BETA

eMclient screenshot

eM client is an excellent email client, and recent releases have been very impressive. They’ve done an outstanding effort to poise themselves as the Microsoft Outlook killer/alternative. The community looking at eM client have been watching it’s development closely.

The eM client crew recently released this from their website.

This was their release…

Xobni for Thunderbird [early with SOCIALMAIL]

xobni for ThunderbirdXobni has come on the scene like gang busters providing what seems a basic function that been should’ve been there and has been over looked for so long. It’s the perfect email client data miner.

Xobni has exclusively developed for Outlook. Microsoft must really be loving that the Xobni crew is putting so much effort in to Microsoft Outlook, but at the same time they have shunned the open source community.

And as I’ve always said, necessity spawns invention.

Thunderbird now has Xobni with SOCIALMAIL.

eMclient v2: An Instant Message Enigma

eMclient Instant Message how toIt’s true the guys over an eMclient are making some serious progress. In my email exchanges they have indicated they’re ‘…seriously busy’ and kudos for all the efforts and their accomplishments.

I’m a big fan of eMclient; I really want to see it succeed and flourish, but one thing about it has in common with other free and open source projects, the programmers usually can’t produce documentation was well as they can write the code.

And you know these guys are using eMclient right now, they’re coding it and they know every inch of how it works, but releasing it in to the wild with average users…

You might as well have released a $50 special jigsaw puzzle, of rock garden, to a 3yr old…

eMclient: How to Setup Hotmail POP Access

eMclient v2 was released a little while back and how to eMclient Hotmail popI’ve been having some issues with eMclient on their Hotmail access and after a little while of tinkering I got it working.

It’s not without a few issues, but since the account wizard doesn’t handle this completely yet, I thought I’d share a small piece of information.

Here’s what I did to get it working…
