GIMP is Being Removed from Ubuntu – Effective v10.04

F-spot screenshotGIMP is a powerful image editing package for Ubuntu/Linux, but the problem is that GIMP is also an image edit package that’s really meant for a higher edge user. Ubuntu is a distribution that likes to say that it’s easy to use. And in a group of simple programs, GIMP stands out like a sore thumb.

So effective the next version of Ubuntu, GIMP is not going to be included. It’s going to be replaced with a smaller, lighter, easy to use and user friendly picture organizer.

Personal Information Manager: MyNotesKeeper

MyNotesKeeper 10292009As your going about your daily life, there’s lots of thing you wish you had to keep track of it all and this was my problem about 4 years ago and then I found MyNotesKeeper. I posted an article about it last year, but it’s getting better, the author has been [within the last few months] actively pushing updates and new features.

One of the things I really like about MyNotesKeeper is the responses from the author; you don’t get it much with other developers, but with MyNotesKeeper he’s been listening to his users and adding the small thing they’re requesting. It really puts a polish on a great program.

Is Google going to be the all powerful Evil OZ?

Evil_Google I was in a discussion the other day with some friends and it was so interesting that it deserves to be written down and shared.

I’m not disgusted with Google and I don’t totally distrust them, but they do control or have access to a lot of information. I mean a lot of information. And when your talking about a company that deals with a lot of information, you really need to ask yourself, ‘what are they doing with it?’ or ‘what can they do with it?’

It’s a troubling thought.

Thunderbird v3b4 – impressions

imageI’ve been reporting on the progression of Thunderbird and they’ve released another beta.

These are some things I noticed about the latest beta from Mozilla.

I think that Mozilla is making improvements; they seem to be subtle and I still think it’s missing a social factor with not trying to connect with more social networking sites, making the connection of people more personal and enjoyable.

Upgrading to Microsoft Windows 7

Windows 7 Upgrade 2009 The time and devastation of Vista is about at an end.  The mediocrity and displeasure of Windows Vista has been widely documented; there’s too many problems to actually document or try to mention, but Microsoft has been on a focused path to get the new version of their operating system on the market and squeeze out any existence of Vista.

Not only does the next version of the operating system seemed to have some serious improvements, but it’s also been given a decent and more mature name, which makes it that much more attractive.

Broadband; the story told as a drug habit

image You see them on TV, in the vans going down the road and they advertise it all over the place. They’re on the corner streets dealing their new drug… broadband.

They started by giving out free samples [AOL, NETZERO] getting the kids and adults hooked on it and then they started jackin’ up the prices so not to scare people away.

The epidemic is so bad that people are spending ours online, playing games, reading, getting news and looking for their soul mates. There’s even a number to call for internet addiction.

The dealers enjoyed their customer base just exploding and they’re pushing their product out to the customers anyway they can- Free trials, price cuts, package deals; anything to get them started.

Now the market is flooded, the dealers can’t keep up with demand. They have so many consumers now; they’re taking all the broadband. The dealers don’t have enough to spare; what to do? what to do?

Ah ha! The answer is presented!
