Making Mozilla Thunderbird Slender and Perfect

ojegtnslMozilla Thunderbird is not one of the applications that I would consider outstanding from a vanilla installation. What make Thunderbird exceptional is its ability to have extensions; to make the program be more than what it is. To have functions that it wouldn’t normally have…

This is where you can think of third-party providers for developing and supporting Thunderbird in making it so extremely popular with its users.

Up to about two months ago I’ve been struggling with the idea of converting off of Thunderbird onto something else. It’s difficult to come to a decision to switch to different software package after you’ve been using something for so long and have become so accustomed to using.

Windows Live Writer Enables Posterous via Plug-in

bb3ixp1zWindows Live Writer has just been handed a plug-in to allow the posting to Posterous. It just hit the web about 4 hours ago.

Scott Lovegrove created the plug-in and 5 lucky people were able to download and test the functionality. It think this will be widely used.

At the time of this post, the plug-in is not listed in the Windows Live Writer Gallery, but I’d suspect it’ll be there soon.

iPhone Stepping Closer To Being Outmoded

iPhone droidSo how many iPhone users are out there were sweating the launch of DROID?

Well you should be… your fancy iPhone is on it’s way out the door. [I hear the boo’s and hissing now] AND it’s not so much Apple’s fault…

The iPhone is an excellent piece of hardware and it’s presentation and abilities set the new standard for ‘personal access devices’ or Smartphone’s, but…

Download Free OCR Software – SimpleOCR

free Optical Character RecognitionJust about all new scanners are coming with Auto Document Feeder (ADF) functionality. And if you aren’t scanning your stuff yet for quick reference or long term storage, you really should.

But you can really take advantage of having these types of documents scanned in and sometimes you need to be able to get the text out of them; that’s when you need optical character recognition (OCR).

If you’ve ever run in to this situation where you’ve a fax or a scanned document and you need to have some or all it it retyped so you can do something with it, you’re going to be glad you’ve a tool like SimpleOCR…

Techie Review: Nuance PaperPort 12 Professional

PaperPort 12 box

This is a ‘techie’ review of PaperPort 12 Professional. Meaning it’s a review coming from someone that’s used PaperPort for years and is familiar with company and private use of the application. This is not a regurgitation of corporate brochures and handouts telling you about a product.

I’ve been using PaperPort since version 6; it came with a scanner [Visioneer] along time ago. I’ve never been able to find something quite as unique as PaperPort in the aspect of how it handles documents, images and other snippets of information AND in the range of affordability as PaperPort.

This is what I found…

Can Mozilla’s Thunderbird bring it together in a Raindrop?

Thunderbird Raindrop[7]I read this article today about how Mozilla Thunderbird is coming together and they’re working on the ‘Universal Inbox’; this is SO MUCH what everyone needs.

And I agree with a lot of what it has to say.

I was discussing this with a friend of mine the other day about this very same problem and he posted a link to RainDrop and it’s a very good point.

People are communicating in all kinds of portals, Instant Message, email, forums, Twitter, Facebook…. the list goes on.

There has to be a way to make sense of it all- maybe Raindrop and be that answer.

Making the comparison: Replacing WinZIP with 7ZIP

money winzip Can everyone agree that ZIP is a standard now?

I think it’s a standard now. It’s basic functionality was built in to the Windows XP Operating System; you could open ZIP [compressed] files without doing anything.

I’ve an associate that absolutely swears by WinZIP. It’s the end all be all of file compression and all he really uses it for is opening ZIP files.

If that’s all, then there’s better options.
