PaperPort Viewer 7 Doesn’t Work With Vista or Windows 7

1eklywpmThis started off as an attempt to establish an export/convert tool for PaperPort MAX files and change them to something more standard like a PDF file. I already had PDFCreator installed, so I just needed a way to print; it’s all a failure and here’s why.

While it may not be important to some folks, but to others it’s important. The free utility from Nuance for PaperPort MAX files is now seriously crippled if you’re a Vista, or a Windows 7 user.

For a long time, Nuance has offered a free utility to view the MAX files that the PaperPort program creates. It’s a proprietary file format that only Nuance uses, and it’s confused a majority of the time with MAX file from 3DMAX Studio. Why anyone would send another person a MAX file is beyond me.

So for Nuance, I don’t know who’s in charge of QA over there, but I can tell you this missed this little gem by a few years.

Making the comparison: Replacing WinZIP with 7ZIP

money winzip Can everyone agree that ZIP is a standard now?

I think it’s a standard now. It’s basic functionality was built in to the Windows XP Operating System; you could open ZIP [compressed] files without doing anything.

I’ve an associate that absolutely swears by WinZIP. It’s the end all be all of file compression and all he really uses it for is opening ZIP files.

If that’s all, then there’s better options.

Review: eMclient v2.0

image eMclient has presented itself as the alternative to Microsoft Outlook and while it has many competitive features, apparently it’s not ready enough to break the finish line ribbon.

Nothing would make me happier than to be able to post an absolutely outrageous and fantastic review about eMclient, but the latest release of this application, after months of waiting, was a little bit of a disappointment to me.

About a week ago the latest revision of eMclient was released, version 2. I had a previous version of eMclient and when I downloaded the next version [v2] I had some difficulties with the upgrade process. I had e-mailed the authors and I didn’t get an immediate response, but I was able to contact them through Twitter. through Twitter I got a quick response from one of the support staff and they gave me the information that needed to be able to clear out the previous installation completely and then start all over. This wasn’t a big deal because I wasn’t using eMclient as my primary e-mail program.

Minefield: Firefox 64bit – Still early…

image I guess I’m among the early few that have a 64-bit operating system. While I can benefit from the speed and the additional resources, I have to put up with the shortcomings of various software providers.

I was looking to take advantage of my system and it’s resources, so I recently downloaded Mozilla’s version of the 64-bit browser called Minefield. It’s an early version of Firefox 64-bit… surely it’ll eventually be renamed to Firefox as it should.

Installing Minefield is no different than installing Firefox, but Minefield obviously performs a lot better in its native environment, but people like myself can’t take full advantage of a web browser like this because Adobe doesn’t provide a 64-bit version of their flash player. This makes using Minefield a problem in most cases.

I can’t watch interactive or rich media, and I can’t watch videos from YouTube. I’m not interested in playing flash games online, but if I were, this would not be my browser.

The 64-bit Count Down for Windows

googlepack For the past couple of years hardware manufacturers have been producing 64-bit systems. Microsoft produced a 64-bit version of Windows XP about seven years ago and for those poor bastards who actually loaded windows XP they realized that they were in a precarious situation because they were running an operating system that was not supported by just about anybody.

Right now majority of the laptops and PCs are being sold are 64-bit systems. 64-bit operating systems are still being considered illegitimate. No one want to put any time or effort into supporting a 64-bit operating system.

Explained: RSS feeds

image So, you’ve see this ICON? You see it everywhere; well, what is it?

What does it stand for and should you be afraid of it?
It’s RSS (Really Simple Syndication) the indication that a site, page or content has the ability to be subscribed to.
Hey- I never thought about it until recently, and I’ve to admit; it’s cool. It’s not too harmful if you have free time.

To simply the definition, this is what it does; It converts WebPages that you visit (for fun, news, work or whatever) in to an email type format.
