Another release of Windows Live Writer has come out and the Windows Live Writer development team has made only small changes thus far.
I’d speculate that Windows Live Writer is going to be in beta for a while longer… The startup/splash screen for Windows Live Writer now says ‘Windows Live Writer 2011’; and that’s fascinating news.
If that’s the case, we’re looking at a full blown/official release of Windows Live Writer around last quarter [late] of 2010; that’s right at 2 years between releases… Initial release was December of 2008. That’s not a very ambitious release schedule.
So what are we noticing with the latest Beta release?
And what things are we still waiting for?

One of the more lacking and obtuse features of Windows Live Writer is the lacking ability to open old posts. In the previous version you were limited to 500 previous posts.
Now that the new Wave 4 beta version is out, you can open 3000+ previous posts, but the catch is that Windows Live Writer has to download all those posts [each time] to reference the one post.
It’s obtuse and a complete waste of time. It makes more sense to poll the blog account, download a listing of previous posts and keep them for reference in the future.
Luckily, and just recently, someone already figured this out and created a plug-in to circumvent that issue in an interesting way.

It’s no secret, Windows Live Writer is a great program, but as with every program, it has a few missing spots. And with the Wave 4 beta being just released and seeing what little improvements have actually been made to the program, it can always use a few more.
One of my issues was the ‘autolinking’ in Windows Live Writer and importing links.
To define what that is, Windows Live Writer has a function to allow you to assign a word a hyperlink, and every time you enter/type that word it gets an active link. But there’s no option to import links, so importing/creating a link one at a time via Windows Live Writer is going to be really cumbersome.
I didn’t like that idea… I came up with my own solution.

Windows Live Writer keyboard shortcuts.
If you’re not already aware of the shortcuts in Windows Live Writer, using the keyboard while your creating your blog is more productive than clicking all over the place … Or having to stumble through the Ribbon GUI.
Considering that Windows Live Writer doesn’t freely offer this information in a straight forward way – I found this and wanted to repost this for everyone [and for my own reference] the shortcuts for Windows Live Writer [and the new ones for Wave 4].
If you click HELP in Windows Live Writer you get the HELP Center; it’s not really helpful. I’m, being a techie, searching for the manual- the how to… I’d like to read to see what the options are before I’ve to join a forum and ask a question and wait for a response. Because in reading documentation, you can usually find the answers.

Windows Live Writer Wave 4 beta still isn’t detecting themes properly and it doesn’t allow for the user to edit while using the theme.
That just takes away all the fun.
It tries to detect it, it says it downloads the theme, but when you attempt to edit, or create a new post it’s hosed. [still] BUT you can edit the theme manually and make it work for you.
Here’s what you need to do to fix it, so you can edit with the theme…

I was adding some image to a blog the other day, and as normal, I was using Windows Live Writer to do all my editing for the blog.
I’m starting to see Windows Live Writer age in front of me. The application is fairly young; it’s not mature- it’s really not and you can see this in the various shortcoming of the program, BUT the high side is that it’s still better than most free offerings, so I’m not going to gripe too much. Plug-ins do a lot to pull in the short areas…
My problem was adding a bunch of images to a blog and NOT using Windows LIVE album; I wanted all the images on my blog, hosted with me and presented inline.
But there were some obstacles…

For those who live and die by the blogging abilities of Windows Live Writer, you’ll notice you got a small update today, or the next time you login to Windows Live Writer. It’s a notice as you open the program.
There was no information provided as to what the slight update was to address, fix or add; so let the hunt begin. Let’s find that ‘what’s new.txt’ file!
I don’t have much information about this update, but I’ve the screenshots.

It’s no secret that the developers from Microsoft for Windows Live Writer and the BLOG THIS plug-in for Firefox haven’t been keeping up with demand from the public.
It’s been over a year since the plug-in was updated. As you read through the reviews of the plug-in and you can see it’s just being completely ignored by the Microsoft Windows Live Writer team.
There’s a lot of bloggers out there that use Windows Live Writer to do their publishing, but as Firefox progresses and adds new features, the Windows Live Writer team hasn’t been placing much love on the much used plug-in; they haven’t updated it in a great while.
But now you don’t have to worry about that… there’s a workaround.
