Released: Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10.1 [64-bit]

Dragon_yeaWith great anticipation, the new version of Dragon NaturallySpeaking has been released. It’s not a 64-bit application, but it’ll install- and that’s what’s important.

The 64-bit version of Dragon NaturallySpeaking can be downloaded from here. Hopefully, you’re not limited by 5gb cap and can spare some bandwidth, the download is 1.5gb.

Nuance is going to allow you to download the MSI installer for free, but if you want a DVD with the installer, you pay $10. So download the file and burn it your self.

Update: Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10.1 64-bit

Nuance Dragon Naturally SpeakingAs a registered user of Nuances Dragon NaturallySpeaking, I’m just as frustrated at the handling of Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 AND 10 as everyone else is, but Nuance is close to releasing the 64-bit version of v10.

If you search the support forums over at Nuance, you’ll find articles from 2006 requesting 64-bit versions of Dragon NaturallySpeaking, but all you’ll see is ‘…that platform is not supported’.

In September 2008, or shortly before, Nuance 64-bit users were greatly disappointed again to find Nuance had once again dismissed them. Not only had they ignored the requests from v9, but they had continued their disregard for their customers by releasing v10 with no 64-bit support.

Annoying: Auto-Update Checking Services

image One of the most irritating things that I run into on a regular basis is auto update programs or services.

Companies like Google install services or applications to run in the background to check for updates for program that they provide.

I view this as a major problem, and it’s a problem that’s stemmed from Microsoft.  Microsoft’s Windows operating system does not provide an architecture for applications to be installed and then automatically check for new versions of themselves.  Instead, Microsoft relies almost software makers to configure or produce some sort of solution ancillary to the operating system.

Minefield: Firefox 64bit – Still early…

image I guess I’m among the early few that have a 64-bit operating system. While I can benefit from the speed and the additional resources, I have to put up with the shortcomings of various software providers.

I was looking to take advantage of my system and it’s resources, so I recently downloaded Mozilla’s version of the 64-bit browser called Minefield. It’s an early version of Firefox 64-bit… surely it’ll eventually be renamed to Firefox as it should.

Installing Minefield is no different than installing Firefox, but Minefield obviously performs a lot better in its native environment, but people like myself can’t take full advantage of a web browser like this because Adobe doesn’t provide a 64-bit version of their flash player. This makes using Minefield a problem in most cases. Read more…

How to: Install Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 on Windows 7 64-bit

Nuance has officially announced that they will now support Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 on on a 64-bit operating system, but I have successfully installed Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 on Windows this to 64-bit and Windows 7 64-bit.

Installation process for this versus Windows 7 for Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 is virtually identical.

There’s nothing dangerous about this process.

The installation files from Dragon NaturallySpeaking are copied to the local hard drive, the installation MSI file is modified to root remove the launch conditions that prohibit installation onto a 64-bit operating system.

The rest of the installation is pretty much stock from Nuance.

ISO Backups = Happiness…

The process of getting new devices and toys to play with on your computer are always so fun. You get a neat little device with a driver disc; you load the driver disc, install the drivers and then plug in your new toy and wha-la!

But alas, what’s to become of your driver disc? I mean the device is loaded, what do you do with the disc? Will you need it again? Probably. Will you be able to find it? Probably not. Or can you find it and it was used a dogs chew toy because you didn’t put it back in it’s case and take care of it…

I offer this little snippet of potential future joy. Read more…

Google’s Chrome just doesn’t shine [yet]

Watching technology and working on the stock market is kind of the same. You look at the information, use your knowledge, make a decision and see if that decision turns out to be the right one; unless your an inside trader [that's illegal].

As the traffic picks up on our site, and we have more visitors, it’s funny to watch the statistics and trends in the Operating Systems and the browsers being used.

CREATIVE: An Insult to Customer Service

image Once in a while you run across exceptional service and support from various software or hardware providers and for a moment your faith in corporate tech support is exonerated, but this is not one of those tails. This is a story of complete and utter failure; an example of the inability to read, absence of an a positive IQ and a barrage of unrelated canned responses will get you.

Allow me to set the stage, I purchased a $90 webcam from CREATIVE in Nov 2008. It was a CREATIVE LIVE CAM PRO Aptia. It’s a high resolution webcam, autofocus, face tracking, animation add-ons and more; supposedly. The reason I purchased the webcam was because I have a 64-bit system I had just purchased and all the normal webcams weren’t working; I had already tried 3 prior and I wanted a good one. And life is full of bad choices aren’t they..

If you’re brave enough to keep reading, this is really funny. This is a support thread of case KMM18331722I15977L0KM from the support staff at CREATIVE.

So thank you for reading and I’m sorry I had to post this as a news article…
