After my post about Windows Defender and Windows security essentials of couple weeks ago, it really pushed me to reevaluate whether or not to have that software on my system, considering how low that software scored with any virus testing and malware detection.
When software scores that low on testing in detection, what good is it?
Taking into account BitDefender scored the highest on the first testing, it only made sense to take a look at the software and to evaluate it for baseline functions and abilities.
I disabled Windows Defender and uninstalled Microsoft Security Essentials off my system and replaced it solely with BitDefender, and I can honestly say that I don’t see myself going back to using the software from Microsoft.
If Microsoft doesn’t care enough to update their software to be competitive in the market, and if Microsoft relates to their product offering as a basis for their customers to get/purchase antivirus software; using their Microsoft Security Essentials as a launching point for catalyst to get something better, I may just do that.
Here’s the latest antivirus software testing chart:
I went to the BitDefender website and BitDefender offers a free version of their antivirus software. Initial download of the BitDefender software is roughly 17 MB, so it’s a relatively small installation file if you have a broadband connection.
Installation only takes about a minute…
Once installed it runs in the system tray. The user interface for BitDefender is very simple; it’s for straightforward. From the main form, the only options you have are to turn their shield over and off as well as the auto scan.
If you visit your BitDefender website profile, the website/software does point to other security solutions, but they’re not required.
So far, I’ve been really impressed with the software is silent running nature and I feel confident in the antivirus software because of its high ratings and antivirus testing. As a free offering for any virus, this is a great replacement for Microsoft Security Essentials/Windows Defender.
This will easily become my new recommendation for antivirus software for people who don’t already have it.
