The new Facebook Messenger – but do you need it?

I mean, did you happen to notice the pop-up window in the bottom right-hand corner?

I thought it was interesting that Facebook would offer something like this considering that Facebook has an open protocol, jabber, that will let pretty much any instant messaging application interface with Facebook to be able to communicate with other members of Facebook.

One of the things that you notice about the messenger immediately is that it looks almost exactly like the smartphone application that everyone uses. I just wrote an article recently on how to set up Digsby with Facebook, using jabber. For the time being, Digsby is my favorite application for managing my instant messaging needs.

But I don’t really understand why Facebook would go ahead with offering their own instant messaging application.

Applications like Skype and Digsby already have a very good level of interface and interaction with Facebook, friend notifications, like and being able to comment on incoming streams without any problems at all. And Skype has made it a directive but there’s to integrate a Facebook tab right into their application; which I think is a huge mistake that will most likely be repealed sometime in the future.

If your main form of communication and social interaction with your friends and family is through Facebook, and you’re not using instant messaging application at all, then downloading the Facebook messenger might be a good option for you, but if you’re already on several instant messaging protocols/services, adding just another messenger to your system is just going to be more resources being taken from your system. People should take into account the service that the Facebook messenger is going to offer; can they simply leave Facebook open and get the same experience?

I wonder about Facebook’s approach to this, most Facebook users visit the website of time today to look for updates, and some people to simply leave the website open all the time, but is the face but messenger driving more traffic and more page views for Facebook, or is it truly a benefit for the users of Facebook. The initial scoping of the messenger application doesn’t seem reincorporating any advertisements or notifications, not Facebook has to worry about incoming revenue anytime soon.

Having a Facebook messenger application, if you’re addicted to Facebook, is probably one of the worst things that you could have. Now you don’t have to visit the website. All the updates and information can come straight to your desktop while you’re trying to be productive, interfering with your daily life and taking more and more of your free time.

Over the next coming weeks, the application is planned to be rolled out to the other Facebook users all over the world. Facebook is working on a messenger version for the Mac. I won’t bother talking about smartphones, because everyone already has Facebook on the smartphones…
