Internet Service Providers: Thieves of innovation

AT&T Yahoo verizon tieredIt’s depressing to see what the Internet Service Providers are doing to the market of everything media.

It makes no matter of the company, but only the fact they provide Internet service to the masses. Internet Service Providers see and know the demand for media/bandwidth and have taken the position that if their services are to be provided, they’ll be done so at a premium.

There’s going to be no such thing as unlimited Internet access.

Verizon has announced that with the future release of 4G for smartphones, they’re going to be charging for service based on tiers. And only days after Verizon, AT&T has said that they too are going to be restructuring their services to be tiered.

Internet Service Providers continue to be astute at seeing a potential for revenue and seizing it.

I can’t help but think that the whole unlimited access thing from the Internet Service Providers was only a trick to get the customers hooked on broadband speed and accustomed to having rich media experiences. And like a junkie would needs, take from them and they’ll pay what ever they need to get what they need.

I’ve long said that the more people need bandwidth, the more ways Internet Service Providers will find a way to charge for it.

Forget going with Netflix downloadable movies, or listening to Pandora all day at work you won’t be able to afford that. Spending a lot of time on YouTube? that’ll stop.

Service like Hulu and YouTube, or any other media based service via the web; it’s going to be a premium.

The latest insult is hitting right in the face of Apple an the new iPad. AT&T has said that it’s going tier their service to 2gb for $25; that’s not a lot.

This places a great limit on the abilities and function of the iPad. I don’t know that Apple is very happy with the relationship with AT&T over this. This makes their product look like a Shriners donation plate.

Having access to the Internet, having it unbridled, successful businesses models have been modeled around this type of access. And for the Internet Service Providers to do this is stealing innovation from every aspect of Internet innovation.

Internet Service Providers are establishing themselves as nothing more than public utility companies, charging for a service. It’s completely incorrect to do so, they know it and the their customer base knows it.

They’re thieves of innovation.

Until next time,

LEHenryJr

Interesting article, but one I don't find surprising. Most businesses today will do all they can to 'nickle & dime' customers the minute they (customers) walk into their establishments.

Banks are NOTORIOUS for this. Gas stations are another, with their Debit/Credit Card fees, as if their current 'markup' doesn't already give them enough in profits to have to resort to such highway robbery!

But if this sorta thing does become 'common' among ISP's, the real question is…"How long will the paying public put up w/it until we've had enough and when THAT point comes, how long will it take Congress or whoever to actually put a stop to it?

      Thanks for your comments.

What's happening in the ISP world is truly disturbing. Initially, how are customers to know which plan they need to buy, if the ISP provided them no gage. How do they know how much each website content is going to rack up? And the gages they do provide are unrealistic.

Just about every website you're going to visit is going to dump 2mb or more on to your hard drive for content alone; much more if the site is Adobe Flash, or some rich media.

In it's short existence the Internet has established itself as a must have tool for home, work and government. Your right, the more ISP's nickel and dime customers over service, that should be ubiquitous access, the more they're going to be outraged; just as they're towards the airlines.

      Thanks again for your comments.
