Ubuntu 9.10 – Playing MP3 Music

November 6th, 2009

Ubuntu mp3I’m a new user to Ubuntu, but I really want to try something new, different, from Windows and I’ve been downloading the various versions as they’ve been released to see the progression of the Operating System.

The progression of Ubuntu has been really good over the past few years and when DELL said they were going to start passing out Ubuntu with your PC’s and laptops, I thought that was great.

The thing is Ubuntu doesn’t seem to get any respect from software and hardware makers.

The catchy thing about Ubuntu is that it doesn’t work, in the common ways you would think, out of the box; it requires some tweaking.

Take for instance playing a MP3.

You can’t play a MP3 out of the box, from a fresh install of Ubuntu, it requires plug-ins to be loaded to play MP3’s. We have devices that are the size of a thumbnail that can play MP3’s…

So from a fresh installation of Ubuntu 9.10, you can open a folder of MP3’s and double click on one and the default player will come up.

Yes- your going to want to search for the right plug-in, but the thing with Ubuntu is this is only one example of the things it should be able to do right out of the box, but it’s not and it’s because it’s not given the support it needs to do so.

There’s legal reasons why they can’t, and this hurts Ubuntu on is adoption…

Ubuntu should find the required plug-ins for you, and then choose CONFIRM.

It download’s the files automatically and they leave the liability of being legal up to you; where most people won’t even check it out.

And the changes are applied and installed. With luck, all the installations will be successful.

The last part is to restart the MP3 player; it should be able to play a MP3 now. And this process is exactly the same for playing a DVD.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,
L. Henry Jr.

Did we really need a tutorial for that? Even though it's not included with the initial install, Ubuntu makes it so easy an idiot couldn't screw it up.
