Question to Microsoft: Why must you have so many versions? |
One of the biggest questions I’ve had for a while now is, why does Microsoft have so many darn versions of their Operating System?![]()
From a tech support standpoint, it’s a nightmare.
Just from my experience, when I’ve asked people which Operating System their using [knowing they’re using Windows] I’ve had people tell me Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer and even Microsoft Word.
Microsoft must really want to put the screw to the support technicians.
During the installation of Windows 7 you’ll see the various versions [Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate] and what’s interesting
about this [on following screen] is that Microsoft doesn’t really offer you any information to make a decision…
Where’s the materials to make an educated decision; are we back to Microsoft knows best?
okay, I’m going to lean back and relax and put my feet of and say alright, there are different ‘flavors’ of Ubuntu, but these are themed releases of an Operating System. But they have version numbers and different names.
Apple [oh dear lord] they understand about a single version of their Operating System. Simplify the Operating System and it can be supported even better. When you simplify, you make things better. Remove all the variables and the confusion and be straight, this is it.
Stop confusing the poor support technicians! They have families too. Why are you placing them in the danger zone? By doing this your actually contributing to spousal abuse… [sarcasm]
Is Microsoft unable to see that Windows 7 Starter and Windows 7 Home Premium is just a bit confusing?
Where’s the part from learning from history? Look at what happened with Windows XP; no one wanted XP- everyone got XP Pro. And the ones that had XP home were looked upon like a colony of lepers. Like what in bloody Gotham can I do with that?
It only makes sense to release one version.
So when that tech on the other end of the line asks the user, ‘what version of Windows are you running?’ the answer can be simply… SEVEN.
Did you feel it? Didn’t that seem easy and just a load lifting from your brain? Just SEVEN.
Having this simple piece of information the tech can move forward, the problem is actually half solved just at that part right there. He doesn’t require a huge database now of Windows versions, keep track of which versions have what functions and now he doesn’t have to be that awful person on the other end of the phone telling the customer he can’t help them because his version of Windows doesn’t support ‘Starter’ or ‘Home Basic’.
But I digress. I completely forgot makes all the rules and knows best for everyone.
I’m so glad they never made it in to government.
Thanks,
L. Henry Jr.
