Is Google going to be the all powerful Evil OZ? |
I was in a discussion the other day with some friends and it was so interesting that it deserves to be written down and shared.
I’m not disgusted with Google and I don’t totally distrust them, but they do control or have access to a lot of information. I mean a lot of information. And when your talking about a company that deals with a lot of information, you really need to ask yourself, ‘what are they doing with it?’ or ‘what can they do with it?’
It’s a troubling thought.
Google has been a champion of sorts on a lot of fronts. They stand for innovation, improvements, open source, sharing information and many others; all noble concepts.
BUT is there an evil Sith in there? Is he twisting the truth, making slow changes, pushing us to their destination, taking us to WAR and are you just psychotic?
Google has done nothing from my perspective to think they’re taking an adverse position to good deeds and they don’t molest anything that they take over/acquire. So far…
So one of the questions were, is Google turning in to MICROSOFT?
I don’t think so. Microsoft acquires companies because they don’t have any original ideas. They wait until the other company is setup, doing great and then wants to bring them about and slap a Microsoft branding on it and pass it off as fantastic.
Google seems to have a much better approach to this process and it’s a bit more transparent about what they’re doing and why…
Search Engine
A couple years ago, all the major search engines were asked to turn in information about searches and which user were searching for what; It was a huge deal. Everyone’s assumed privacy was grossly being invaded. No one wanted to be accused of surfing for porn just because they typed in ‘boobs’ or being considered a pedophile because they typed in ‘kids toys’.
But is Google using this information to build user profiles? I think they’re, but at the same time they aren’t showing their hand by trying to customize the searches based on things you searched for and what other ‘like’ persons search for… based on a list or user profile.
Think about everything you’ve ever searched for and just imaging taking that and building a profile of what you clicked on. Google would be able to build a pretty accurate profile of what TYPE of person you are.
They would know that you can be dishonest, froogle, smart, well paid, like to shop or like to spend money on high end items or if you’re a DIY kind’a person; it’s all right there.
GMAIL
So how hard is it to ease drop on you email account is it anyway. Google is a great web based email provider, but they’ve also added functionality to get emails from other accounts and mix them together in one pile; to have all your emails in one place for you- and them?
Instant Messages {Google Talk]
GoogleTalk is right up there with all the popular chat clients.
A lot of traffic is going through there a day; what if they wanted to monitor just one person- could they/would they? And what if a court [local or domestic] wanted the chat logs of everything that as said or files transferred…
You mix this in with your search habit’s and your starting to build a really good picture.
Google Voice [GTALK]
This is one of those new services by Google that’s really going to stand out. Google is really trying to put themselves in a position to have information and control it. Where’s the promise it’s not going to be used for other uses. What if the government says they have to turn over every transcribed voice message, fax or email that’s been processed.
even if you’re a good person a lot of information can be skewed and used against you; this is what prosecutors do- it’s a refined art.
Google Docs [office]
There’s something about creating, storing and depending on Google to handle my documents. I mean really, why do you need to create a document at all; you going to put important information in there- sometimes personal or confidential information in there.
If you’re working with spreadsheets, your storing numbers, statistics, percentages and ratios of sales or project projections- These are the things you need a spreadsheet for… You don’t create a spreadsheet to store pretty pictures.
And while all this information is being stored; is it being reviewed cataloged? Are they digging through it for key words and if they hit one are they going to open your patent idea, your potential customer sales or your home monthly budget? We don’t know.
Intrusive adverts
Not forgetting Google is an advertising company, they sell ad space and put it everywhere. They’re already placing ads in the GMAIL pages.
Now, what’s going to make me sit up and cough is when I’m in the middle of a Instant Message and then I get an advert about a word I sent or received.
Are they going to be transcribing the voice mails, picking up keywords and then placing voice/audio ads in the emails you get; listening to ads in your own voice message.
It’s fair to say that Google is handling and processing a lot of data for a great many people and a great many people are placing their trust in Google.
I realize from the front that Google is doing a lot of good things and they’re innovating and they’re thinking, but from an objective perspective or controlling perspective; Google really has their hands in a lot of plates and information is power.
If they can keep people focused on the good things their doing, then they can keep some of the demons at bay. But if it’s revealed, that just once, Google has misused the public trust on the services they provide- you can expect a backlash of public anger.
What do you think? Am I right?

Hey. its my first time on your blog. It is quality indeed.
Regarding google. You have actually raised my doubts and fears regarding privacy. I am not a big Google consumer, yes I use their Gmail and of course their search. Indeed, thinking about the stuff I usually searched Google for, through it they can build a semi accurate image of who I am.
So shouldnt there be a sort of an organization whose obligation is to keep a constant eye on those big companies who are held responsible and considred reliant for keeping people's information, like google and MS ?
I mean we use G and its services based merely on trust, and popularity, which itself is a cause of trust. So what assures us that , like you said, they dont use that info for the bad ?
An international – multinational organization for observing and constant monitoring of such companies is required, just like the Nuclear Energy Agency, which perform field examinations of countries who develop nuclear energy.
Mouad,
I live in a world of denial; which is why I stay so happy [smile], but
the Internet is ever evolving and scary at the same time. I find the
amount of data and social data out there staggering.
People's issues of trust are not totally misplaced. But when you take a
company like Google, that has their hands in just about every aspect of
online life, it's hard to discard the background operations. What if
someone were to ask of Google; build me a profile of Mouad; I think they
could do it fairly close. It's definitely a need for concern.
A judge just ordered Google to identify a blogger; they did with not
much more than a request.
They have the ability.
I think the only thing that's saving them right now is the fact they
haven't used that 'information' for an alternate purpose and their
apparent good will towards the open standards of the Internet. But
should they make that turn- I see a great exodus.
Thanks for writing back- I love intelligent conversations.
Thanks,
L. Henry Jr.

Now Google is searching for every shared web cam and putting them at people's finger tips through google Earth. What an easy way for someone to know when you are not home and to kindly make themselves at home to your stuff.
I really like a lot of Google's products, but the people who are willing to give you the world typically want something in return. In Google's case, they want all information to control all the information.
It's amazing what information people are willing to give on the grounds
of this is cool.
The day I hear an evil laugh coming from their website… I'm gonna get
chills.
Google Voice != GTALK. GTALK is Google Talk, aka, Google's instant messager. Google Voice is a completely separate service.
and it's Google.
Thanks for your comments.
