eMclient: How to Setup Hotmail POP Access |
eMclient v2 was released a little while back and
I’ve been having some issues with eMclient on their Hotmail access and after a little while of tinkering I got it working.
It’s not without a few issues, but since the account wizard doesn’t handle this completely yet, I thought I’d share a small piece of information.
Here’s what I did to get it working…
Automatic Updates
One of the things I really like about eMclient is that it has an automatic updater.
The program automatically detects that there is an update to the application and give you an option to download the update. When the update is downloaded, you’re provided with a status bar and once everything is ready the update process is initialized automatically; eMclient is closed, the new version is installed and you’re given an option to reopen the application.
The Account Wizard
This is a ‘work in progress area’ because while they’re making progress in making it easy; the focus is still on the integration with GMail. I say this because you can’t use Yahoo! with eMclient unless you’ve the plus account with Yahoo!, and that’s not eMclients fault, but I think in the spirit of ‘wizards’ they should know you can only do this is the use has a plus account.
And I also tried it on my Hotmail account and it didn’t work completely [at first]. I was able to get eMclient to check my mail and pull down new emails from Hotmail, but I initially couldn’t get it to SEND emails [note the port changes]. Microsoft reopened the Hotmail ability to use their POP account a few months back and I’ve been using it with my Mozilla Thunderbird.
Yahoo!
Just so you know,
I tried the account import wizard and it worked great for my GMail account, but I couldn’t use it for my Yahoo! account.
To be honest, I was trying to get the Instant Messaging in eMclient to work. According to the developers, it should work.
…other IM services implementation (and Pidgin integration) – we don’t plan this because of several reasons.
…we already support other IM services like ICQ, MSN, Facebook chat, Yahoo etc with Jabber transports (we can even recognize these with appropriate icons etc)
I just can’t figure it out yet…
Hotmail
On my Hotmail account, it didn’t auto-discover/detect my account settings; it gave me an error message about not being able to find ‘Hotmail.com’
But there is/was an option MANUALLY set settings. I turned that off and went that route…
Of course when you go this way, manually, you need to know all the required settings.
You’ll need to know the setup info for Hotmail to get it to work with eMclient.
Here’s the settings I used:
Your email address: UserName@hotmail.com/MSN.com/LIVE.com
|
SMTP Server: Port: 25 or 587* {*Note: If port 25 has been blocked in your network or by your ISP, you can set SMTP port to 587 with TLS or SSL Encryption depending on the client in use} Use authentication and TLS security. |
POP server: pop3.live.com Port: 995 Use authentication and SSL security. |
Always exceptions…
While I was able to get eMclient to send and receive emails, I kept getting repeated error messages from eMclient.
It wasn’t doing this consistently, but it was occurring. The irritant in this is the operations window; every error is reported by eMclient and a pop-up window is presented each time the error occurs.
This could be handled much better with an exclamation point in the bottom left [where the status icon is].
I was able to setup Hotmail on Thunderbird with the same setting and it seemed to work fine; it’s been fine for a while now; worked fine.
No Localized Folder for additional accounts
When you add additional accounts to eMclient doesn’t create a localized folder in the tree
listing. I was expecting application to create a localized folder for Yahoo and for Hotmail just as it had for the other two Gmail accounts I created.
Again the application seems to be focusing on integration with Gmail more than anything else, any additional accounts seem to be placed in the ‘local folders’ listing on the left-hand side.
I really don’t like this type of design because I can’t separate the accounts and filter information based upon those accounts. As a suggestion to the developers and will probably offer the option to create a separate folder per e-mail account.
Troubleshooting this
One of the things I think that eMclient should have, as a suggestion to the developers, is the ability to pin the operations window. This would be very useful when you’re trying to troubleshoot connectivity problems.
The activity log in eMclient simply shows that the connection timed out trying to get a response from the e-mail server:
10:50:27 AM HOTMAIL [POP3] Connecting: To HOTMAIL
10:50:29 AM HOTMAIL [POP3] Connected: To HOTMAIL
10:50:30 AM HOTMAIL [POP3] Downloading messages: From HOTMAIL
10:50:30 AM HOTMAIL [POP3] Disconnected: From HOTMAIL
10:50:30 AM HOTMAIL [POP3] Disconnected: Done
10:50:45 AM HOTMAIL [SMTP] Connecting: To HOTMAIL
10:51:06 AM HOTMAIL [SMTP] Connect failed with reason:
"A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond 65.55.172.254:25"
10:51:06 AM HOTMAIL [POP3] Connecting: To HOTMAIL
10:51:08 AM HOTMAIL [POP3] Connected: To HOTMAIL
10:51:09 AM HOTMAIL [POP3] Downloading messages: From HOTMAIL
10:51:09 AM HOTMAIL [POP3] Disconnected: From HOTMAIL
10:51:09 AM HOTMAIL [POP3] Disconnected: Done
The developers have been really responsive to new issues and the needs of their product;and it’s coming along nicely.
Hope this helps.
Thanks,
L. Henry Jr.
