Basic Broadband Access Should Be A Law

October 15th, 2009

Internet basic rights net neutralityCNET publishes this article about Finland passing a law that every person has a right to 1mb broadband speeds.

This is what I’ve been saying all this time. Not everyone needs 6mb downloads, but everyone needs access to the web. There are too many resources now that are provided by the governments for citizens not to be given basic access to the Internet.

Having Internet service has established itself as a basic right.

I endorse the idea of each person/family having access to the Internet. This facilitates civil options, education, learning and other social points.

If the local utilities could offer this along with electricity, not requiring any advanced wiring, it’d be much easier to deploy.

Given the option in the US, this will be a long time before that happens. Domestic ISP’s will not do this. It’s hard enough to make those old farts in Washington realize the Internet is not a maze of tubes. The US is slow in adopting any new technologies or logical thought.

Thanks for reading!
