Making money as a Blogger

August 24th, 2009

image Being a non-blogger I’m sure it’s easy to step back and say I can do that, ‘I can be a blogger’; I can make money doing that, but honestly can you?

I started my website as a service to my public; my family, friends, strangers that needed some help […here to go my site] and it was also to keep my customers informed about new technology on things that are happening in tech. It’s evolving so fast and there’s always something new for me to talk about with my co-worker, associates and random geeks [like me].

But buying a domain every year, paying for hosting is only part of it- it’s also your time, talent and skills to bring all this together to try to help others. There’s got to be a small kick back- and that’s me. I’m just trying to cover the cost of running the site. Anything more than that is flattering- really.

So in order to cover those costs, I decided to add a site sponsoring to my website. At which point, you’re pretty much conceding that anyone that has a product or website can advertise on your website if they’ll pay you a small monetary value; that value can be very small.

Justifying those payments can be from endorsing their products, selling links on your website, placing images and banners on your website or various other methods.

The most common is to simply sign up with an advertiser like Google AdSense; where you sign up for an account, they give you some HTML code, you place it somewhere in the content of your website and then based upon the number of views [ppv] or clicks [ppc] of the advertised links, you are rewarded with a monetary value. But this is just the beginning…

Now the important part is traffic. You have to get traffic to your website. The more traffic you receive, the more page views you get and the more rewarded you are from advertiser. You’re actually rewarded more if the person on your website clicks on one of the advertised links. This is the real fight and this is where a lot of websites struggle to stay afloat.

For example, if you’re using WordPress [like me]; here’s a few:

or even…

PAYPAL Donations

But also be careful of these guys, not to let the ads be too far off topic for your website.

Ad placement; if your using WordPress, there’s lots of plug-ins to help you get the ads on your website and place them where you want them…

But in order to make this work, you’ve to have a serious level of website traffic.

You’ve got to have something everyone wants to see, do or know; keeping them coming back. Return customers are always the best.

This is a good example of how things rack up on blogging and making money:

Being a blogger is also NOT a get rich quick scheme, especially if your a new website. New websites will get very little traffic early on, but in time should start building to something more substantial. Keeping in mind, more visitors, the better. And don’t count on this to be a deal where you can just up and quit your job.

As a new website, you’re not going to get loads and loads of traffic unless there’s something fishy going on, and if that’s the case, you just violated the ‘terms of service’ with all your advertisers and they will drop/suspend you; you loose your account, your advertisements and your money [if you had a balance].

Here’s a resource that might help with advertising with WordPress.

Alternatively, if you don’t have your own website, and you simply want to write for other websites, there’s a bunch of those websites too. You can get a JOB as a blogger; ProBlogger.net has some posted all the time.

But you can do a search in Google and get a ton of listings and sources for Blogging jobs. It’s not for everyone, but if you just love to write, this might be for you.

Are you blogger; what do you think?
