Rain Barrels: Using Rain Water to irrigate your yard

July 10th, 2009

image From place to place and town to town; it doesn’t really matter.

There’s times when there’s a lack of rain. Water becomes scarce and in other places watering restrictions are placed on home owners where they can only wash their cars or water their yards on certain days.

But what if you didn’t have to worry about that so much- what about other options.

Why not capture the rain from your gutter, put it in a large bucket and hold it for when YOU need it.

Why this isn’t used more, I don’t know.

The picture provided is just an example and there’s lots of other choices. But I liked this one cause it was simple. It’s basically a large garbage can with a garden hose connector [how convenient is that?] or to a PVC pipe system [sprinkler system].

image Essentially what your doing is just putting a cater out there for rain. When it rains the barrel will catch all the water and store it; obviously you want to place a filter at the stop of the barrel to make sure no debris or bugs [mosquitoes] is allowed in to the barrel.

If the barrel gets full, there’s a simple over flow. Route it anywhere you want or need it to go.

For like TX, if you’ve an overflow the best place to put it in the summer time is around the home foundation.

Depending on how ambitious and what you goals are you could probably shoot for something bigger.

Your goals may include replacing all the water in your house for toilets, sinks and showers; it can be done.

Again, this all depends on the level of independence your willing to obtain.

While it would nice to be completely off the grid, per se- I don’t think this is a realistic situation; sure it’s possible, but I think a lot of changes would’ve to be made to accomplish this feat, as well as life style adjustments to account for when and if you get rain.

I just don’t want to be thinking about someone standing there stinking of BO and waiting for rain. That’s a NO situation.image

I found this informative when I found it. Now you could apply this to provide hot water, but I think that’s another project.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for reading!

Enjoy.
