Does having NO cell phone = Bad employee?

June 30th, 2009

image I’ve to wonder right now, with everything that’s going on, and what’s considered standard perception by an employer.

When I was growing up there was no cell phone and the ones that were around, were the size of a brick [an most looked like one].

As technology has progressed, and cell phones are no longer attached to cars, and now to our pocket books and now to our hips; I’ve to ask to employers, and  to generally everyone, if you don’t have a cell phone, does this make someone/you less of a ‘good employee’?

I work with computers all day. I check my emails, surf the web, get the news, weather and popular stuff, but I don’t like talking on the phone. I talk on the phone when I need to use the phone. I’ll concede that it’d be nice to have a PC strapped to me at all times to be ‘wired’, but I honestly prefer to have to use my mind every once in a while. I like not having to answer the phone because someone thinks I’ve a leash attached to me at all times. I just don’t like that feeling.

People seem to be so ‘wired’ in… to have the information at their finger tips.

They don’t even need to know how to get there if they have their GPS in their phones. They don’t need to know the answer if they can ‘Google it’. And there are people everywhere, on their cell phones, airing their company business and personal lives in public [on their phones]- most of it I DON’T WANT TO HEAR!

I don’t need to know ‘you’re having to sell a lung because your company is broke’ or ‘while you were having your colon cleaned, you found out your boyfriend was cheating on you.’ Those type subjects, I think are completely inappropriate for public areas.

AND I don’t like being called at odd times of the day and night to be given bad news. I can actually wait to get back home, check my voicemail and say, ‘eff’n great- that sucks’. But until that point, I was having a great time.

I like my personal time; what’s left of it.

Having a boss call you at dinner time, during your favorite show or during your family time is unfair [what’s fair right?] and I wonder is this cause by bad management, poor planning, being over worked or whatever…

I understand the concept of a company requiring you to have a cell phone and issuing a cell phone, but if it’s my cell phone and it’s my dime; basically my home phone- why is it I’ve to be available every second of the day; WHY is it expected? Is it possible to have a point in my day or days, where I don’t have a phone strapped to my hip?

Yes. Yes there are.

Personally, I use my phone for base purposes and I send very few texts, but given the option, I wouldn’t have a cell phone.

So getting back to the initial issue, for people who are feeling somewhat the same; does this make us bad employee’s?
