There’s a few things that you can do to make sure that you have a healthy PC and try to ensure that that PC stays running and virus free.
PC’s require a level of responsibility make sure you are doing your part by protecting your PC. Here’s a few things you can do to keep your PC (and others) in good health:
The very first thing you should do we need a new PC is install antivirus software. There are hundreds and thousands of viruses out there that all they want to do is destroyed data and calls havoc on your PC.
Software packages like Symantec and McAfee offer software packages that can protect your PC but at the same time rob it of vital system resources that will slow and your PC. They also want your money; the initial cost of buying their software plus the subscription cost of maintaining that software.
If you become an avid Web surfer your find out that there are options out there on the Internet their free and that are just effective as the software packages that these companies are offering.
- AVG7 – (Recommended) free for personal use/ does not run on server operating systems.
- Antidote Super Lite version
- ClamWin – good but no real-time scanning.
You may be asking yourself what’s the firewall? The easiest possible answer is that it’s a piece of software that keeps the bad people out. The Windows operating systems are very popular and 90% of the PCs on the planet have a Windows operating system on it.
The older Windows offering systems such as Windows 95, Windows 98 &Windows ME are very susceptible to attacks by malicious individuals whose only purpose is to cause havoc and to destroy your perfect PC world. By installing a firewall on your system it basically cloaks your PC, when you’re connected to the Internet and prevents individuals from connecting to your PC without authorization.
Notice: if you’re running a newer operating system such as XP or greater, those Windows operating systems have a firewall built-in and can be utilized without installing additional software.
SpyWare is just as bad as a virus. SpyWare is an application that is unknowingly installed on your system to track your Internet browsing or to utilize your system and malicious way or to collect personal data without your knowledge. SpyWare can allow your PC to be used as a proxy to send out spam e-mails to hundreds and thousands of people without your knowledge and slowing down your Internet connection to the point where it’s intolerable.
On a daily basis, or in real-time, your PC should be scanned at least once a day for SpyWare and make sure that your PC is healthy and is not being utilized for some malicious purposes.
If your a person that receives email on a regular basis, I’m sure your tired of Junk Mail. Start by getting a spam filter and there are free alternative to paying for this service.
Also, try a good email program; ‘Thunderbird’ it’s nice and safe. Unlike Outlook.
Use a Web Browse that’s Safe. Microsoft has done very well for it’s self spreading their influence over the world with a free web browser included with an OS (Operating System). They have also contributed to the spread of viruses and malicious code executions. The problem with Internet Explorer is that it’s too closely with bound with the Windows operating system. This allows malicious programmers to develop applications that specifically target Windows users.
Note: By no means am I advocating that the recommended browser is going to keep you (the user) perfectly safe- there’s no such thing, but I believe by using an application that is not integrated with the operating system and using a browser that actually adheres to the Internet standards the operator is in a much safer position.
